What is PFAS? Dr. Ruth Roberts breaks down how it affects our health & our Pet's Health

PFAS. You’ve heard of them, but what do you really know about them?

PFAS are chemicals that were used for decades to make products stain-resistant, waterproof and nonstick. They’re found in items like waterproof jackets and fast food wrappers, as well as firefighting foam and other products used by the military. They don’t break down in the environment and can be found in drinking water sources near military bases and airports where they are used.

Studies have linked PFAS exposure to health problems including cancer, thyroid disease and weakened immunity. In fact, some studies show that these chemicals can lower testosterone levels in men. Even small amounts of PFAS can cause harm—for example, a study from last year showed that two compounds had negative effects on male rats when given at levels below 25 parts per trillion!

And I will Talk to you today about something really serious, forever Chemicals. So it’s something I’ve been researching for quite some time. I started looking into this when one of my clients asked me, or one of my coaching clients asked me, Hey, what is up with with Seresto collar class action suit?

And I didn’t know because that’s one of the things I would use, I would recommend for dogs and cats for flea control. So I look into it, and it turns out. Several pets have died after wearing the collar and get sick in other ways, sadly valid for many other pest control products for fleas and ticks.

But in the case of seresto collars, if you’re not familiar with those that are this little happy deal. The environmental working group filed a class action suit against the manufacturer to get this thing pulled off the shelf. It turns out that’s only part of the problem. The problem is that you have consumed more PFAS because many communities use them to support mosquito control problems.

What Are the Pet Food That Is Contaminated with PFAS?

And then the other big thing is Most US pet food is contaminated with forever chemicals. The study says this is the problem it’s in the bloody packaging. So these are mainly, be bags of pet food that have been lined with plastic. To help prevent them from leaking grease to the outside. And no, no kidding.

  • MeowMix tender centers for cats.
  • Purina Blue Buffalo Iams had much lower levels, but still some present. So the highest for the Meow mix was 600 parts per million. For dogs, kibbles and bits registered just under 600 parts per million.
  • And then Blue Buffalo’s Life Protection Formula, Haha, has 150 parts per million.

So there are a ton of other pet foods in there. They did not test the food specifically for contamination, but in past research on the human side, it was found that chemicals leached from fast food wrappers onto human food. The PFASs are contaminating the pet food that’s inside.

So the manufacturers have yet to commit to making the food healthier.

Since PFAS are everywhere, How do we avoid them?

The other problem is, again, this stuff is everywhere. A technique has been developed to break these things down, but. The problem is it is everywhere in our environment because it has been sprayed in the state of [00:03:00] Massachusetts; they realized that the water table was incredibly contaminated with PFASs because of their mosquito control program.

So why am I telling you this? Environmental. Contamination is an enormous problem. It is not just glyphosate. Unfortunately, we have put so many chemicals into the world, and they are in our broader water cycle globally. So yes, we’re eating plastics from fish. We’re getting plastic in our drinking water.

We always, and then all, sea salt is contaminated with plastic, but that’s just the beginning. It’s PFASs, it’s glyphosate, it’s arsenic, it’s D T. It’s just, An inordinate problem. So how do you protect yourself, and how do you protect your pet? Number one, stop using plastic packaging.

Don’t buy stuff in a plastic bag or has a plastic lining because you will be eating whatever the chemicals are in that lining. Number two, eat a whole diet and feed that to your pets. So use the original Crock Pet Diet too. Include tons of fresh vegetables, like broccoli, kale, and green beans, in the pet’s diet, which will help its body.

Please get rid of this garbage and get it out of its system. And number three, exercise. Drink clean water. So exercise, that’s, There’s an inordinate amount of information on the human side that tells us if you exercise, you will help your body detoxify. And then number four, I should say, is to drink clean water.

If you’re not using a water filter like a Burkey filter that can take pretty much every chemical out there, including PFASs B H T. and All these other scary initials, you need to get one. A Britta filter is helpful, but it doesn’t complete the [00:05:00] job. I urge you not to do a reverse osmosis filter because you’re just dumping all that junk back into the water system at a higher, highly concentrated rate.

At least with a filter like the Burkey filter, you can reuse the carbon. Over and over again. And then the arsenic filters help get the heavy metals and other stuff out. You can replace it every six to 12 months. So it’s much less impact on the water environment. We can take some of this stuff out of circulation.
