Pet food recalls are scary, but you can keep your critter safe and healthy. Recent pet food recalls from Blue Buffalo and Wellpet for certain canned dog foods have some pet owners worried. The Blue Buffalo Company recalled recent lots of BLUE Wilderness® Rocky Mountain RecipeTM Red Meat Dinner Wet Food for Adult Dogs, while Wellpet flagged batches of their Wellness 95% Beef Topper for Dogs.
Both products have been recalled due to elevated levels of “naturally occurring beef thyroid hormones.” Ingesting very high amounts of these hormones could seriously mess with a pup’s metabolism.
Symptoms that your pooch may have been affected would include weight loss, increased thirst and
urination, restlessness and anxiety. Over time, prolonged exposure could eventually cause vomiting,
diarrhea and rapid or difficulty breathing.
If your puppy has eaten either of the foods in recalled lots and batches, be aware. Should you notice
any of the aforementioned symptoms, call your vet right away.
It’s fortunate that the dogs affected in these recalls recovered quickly. After they stopped eating the contaminated food, and some brief treatment, all these pets are good as new. These are the lucky ones.
In the past, contamination of pet foods has led to misfortune and tragedy. Only recently, Evangers issued a recall after pentobarbital was found in cans of food. This drug is commonly used for euthanasia and caused nearly a dozen dogs to become ill, one being fatally poisoned.
