turmeric in dogs

Turmeric has been utilized in India for thousands of years for its therapeutic properties. Its main ingredient curcumin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticoagulant properties. Many individuals resort to natural anti-inflammatory remedies like turmeric to avoid the high expense of over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

Moreover, curcumin’s medical usefulness for humans has been demonstrated in recent studies.

There are a variety of studies that assess the advantages of turmeric to dogs. Additionally, holistic veterinarians and pet nutritionists encourage fur parents to use the medicinal herb to help relieve chronic inflammation and pain caused by several diseases and conventional medication. Although it hasn’t been studied as extensively in pets, in general, however, turmeric is safe for dogs in small quantities. In fact, it may be stated as an ingredient on the label of your dog’s food.

TURMERIC’S ANTI – INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES

The body’s natural response to stress, toxin, and infection is inflammation. If your dog is exposed to an illness or injury, for example, the body will respond by dilation of blood vessels to increase blood flow. As a result of increased blood flow, there is pain and swelling in the tissue which is a very common issue in dogs with arthritis. You may be thinking that inflammation is only a problem for dogs with the joint disease but cancer, arthritis, allergies, kidney disease, dental disease, and digestive disease are all caused by inflammation. The worst part is that if your dog experiences long–term chronic inflammation it becomes dangerous to your dog’s health because it is the true cause of most degenerative and inflammatory health issues in your dog.

Fortunately, turmeric can reduce inflammation by lowering blood vessel dilatation, decrease edema, decrease redness, decrease cytokine production. To support this claim, a study of dietary curcumin in dogs with osteoarthritis conducted by Sgorlon et al. (2008) found that it acted as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and confirmed that it modulated immune response. Also, a study published in the International Journal Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology shows that curcumin could act as an alternative anti-inflammatory for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis (Colittia et al, 2012). Furthermore, the results of the study conducted by Farinacci et al. (2009) with horses (mares and foals) achieved the same results finding that curcumin acted to suppress the cytokines that cause inflammation.

TURMERIC’S ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES

Free radicals can cause aging and degeneration in pets by destroying their cells. Unhealthy dog meals, chemicals, pesticides, radiation, poisons, and pollution are all sources of free radicals. Turmeric, fortunately, contains antioxidant qualities that help combat free radicals. As a result, permanent cell damage is avoided. Antioxidants are recognized for extending life spans and decreasing the aging and degeneration process. In fact, it’s a well-known scientific truth that oxidative stress, like rust, builds up in your dog over time. As a result, the cells, DNA, and proteins in your dog’s body are damaged.

In 2015, a study discussed how oxidative stress activates inflammatory pathways and, as a result, leads to chronic diseases like cancer. According to the study, “curcumin can play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases,” which is a solid argument to include turmeric in your dog’s diet.

TURMERIC’S ANTICOAGULANT PROPERTIES

Same as well as humans, dogs have a way of protecting themselves from bleeding, most of the time, the blood’s ability to clot is a good thing but there are times when blood clots can be dangerous.

Turmeric, thankfully, has antioxidant properties that aid in the fight against free radicals. As a result, permanent cell damage is avoided. Turmeric can aid in the reduction of LDL cholesterol and hence blood clots in the heart. It has the same anticoagulant effect as anticoagulant medicine without negative side effects.

You can give your dog many health advantages by giving him the proper amount of turmeric on a regular basis. Turmeric’s curcumin is an antioxidant, anticoagulant, and anti-inflammatory, so it can be a suitable alternative to NSAIDs for treating arthritic diseases – especially if your dog has previously had a negative reaction to traditional therapy.
