Dog on Path

If you’re an owner of man’s best friend, you want to do everything in your power to keep your precious pooch healthy and happy.

One way to do this is by treating your pup’s health problems.

With decades of experience in veterinary medicine, I’ve spent many years helping dog owners treat their fur buddies for health issues.

However, I have a mission to help your pup be healthy and happy through a better way than merely treating health problems.

I want to see you prevent medical problems for your dog.

From accidental poisoning to kidney disease, there are a number of dangers you can avoid to prolong your dog’s life and make it a happy one. I’ll detail 7 doggie medical problems you can prevent.

#1 Prevent Poisoning

You may be a highly responsible individual, but that doesn’t mean your pup is never in danger of eating something toxic.
Dog poisoning can come in many shapes and sizes. Antifreeze isn’t the only substance you should beware.

Read this article on how to avoid accidental poisoning. While antifreeze is on the list, you may be surprised at the other dangers included.

This article will detail some household and outdoor plants that can poison your pet. If your pet loves to dig up and eat your flowers, be sure to check out this article.

#2 Prevent Contaminated Dog Food

Danger could be lurking right inside your dog food container.

Pet food recalls do happen, and they can spell danger for both you and your pet. One way you can prevent medical problems for your dog is by avoiding store-bought pet food.

Mass-manufactured dog chow can put your beloved pup in danger of contaminated ingredients. Just check out my article on some recent pet food recalls.

#3 Prevent Obesity

Food can pose another danger for your pet. But this time, it’s not contamination. The wrong kind of food could put Fido in danger of obesity. Like humans, your pup’s risk of health issues increases with obesity. (Check out this article for 4 tips to prevent your pup (or kitty) from becoming hefty.)

As I explain in my article on calorie restriction, your dog may not be getting the proper nutrition with conventional dog food. One way to prevent medical problems that stem from obesity is to switch your pet to natural, wholesome food.

#4 Prevent Serious Damage from Chicken Bones

If you’re in the habit of slipping Fido a delectable drumstick…I’m here to tell you to stop for the sake of his health. Chicken bones seem harmless, but they are quite dangerous.
You may not know that these bones can cause a number of health problems, such as…

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Dehydration.
  • Vomiting.

Check out my article to recognize (and thus prevent) serious danger if your dog eats chicken bones.

#5 Prevent Chronic Urinary Tract Infections

Chronic urinary tract infections may plague your precious pooch. Maybe it seems your pup has an infection every time you turn around. To heal your pup from a string of UTIs, check out my article on gut health.

Believe it or not, gut health is the key to stopping chronic urinary tract infections. And the key to healing your pup will be the key to preventing UTIs from reoccurring.

#6 Prevent Kidney Disease

Kidney disease is both common and serious. If you want your dog to live a long and happy life, you’ll want to do everything you can to prevent this disease.

Be sure to check out my blog post on helping your furry friend avoid kidney disease through proper nutrition.

To understand kidney disease better, be sure to read my article on 5 Facts You Didn’t Know about Kidney Failure in Pets. I’ll explain why kidney disease is so subtle and what you can do about it.

#7 Prevent Cancer

Cancer is a dreaded word, and your best bet is prevention rather than treatment. One of the ways you can do this is to build your furry friend a cancer-fighting exercise routine.

As I explain in this article, lowering your pet’s BMI is a step you should take. (You may also be intrigued by the properties of fish oil on cancer!)

To wrap up our discussion, here’s the biggest takeaway I want you to understand:

If you want to prevent medical problems, you must begin with what you put in your dog’s bowl.

For most health issues, nutrition is the key to both treating and avoiding kidney failure, obesity, infections, and more.
