iPet’s Ally Weekly Q&A Round-up 11-02-20: Can local oily fish be used to reduce the fish oil dosage?

1. What is Alk Phos and should the intake of Liposomal Glutathione be continued until it’s finished?

So, alk phos is one of the major liver enzymes and it is not uncommon to see this be elevated in dogs as they age. Now, assuming that your dog has elevated alk phos for quite some time, that means that the liver really could use some extra help. So, I sure would continue taking liposomal glutathione until it’s finished about 2 months

2. What is the target urine pH in pets and what can you do to help normalize your pets’ urine pH?

So, our target for urine pH to not create crystals both acidic is something low like 6 and for high alkaline like 8, is something like 7 to 7 and a half. Again, the golden dose is 7 to 7 and a half. You can check this at home using pH strips so it’s very easy to do. Now, what I would is start adding a small amount of vitamin C. Suppose your pup is large, so what I would suggest is to give about 250 milligrams of vitamin C per day and titrate that dose based on what you need to get things under control.

3. What can you do to help treat you pup’s wax build – up in the ears?

Assuming that your vet said that the slight wax build – up in your pup’s left ear could have caused the balance issues and to see more, he would have to sedate your pup. That’s interesting.

If you are not sure if the ear canal is open or closed at the eardrum level, the safest one is going to be something like apple cider vinegar. What I would encourage you to do is take your pup back and see the remainder of the eardrum. Generally, an X – ray is not going to be very useful as far as seeing guck in the middle ear. It would be better to actually flush the ear out under anesthesia and get rid of all the goo. So, I hope that’s helpful.

4. Can local oily fish be used to reduce the fish oil dosage?

Using some local oily fish to reduce the fish oil dosage and is great! I mean, that’s where the fish oil is coming from, so if you have it fresh it’s even better. I believe a ten of sardines on general in average, will provide somewhere around 1700 to 2100 milligrams of Omega – 3 fatty acids, so that’ll give you some reference on helping to use that in real fish in place of the oil itself.

5. Is Golden Paste safe to use long term with that hundred mg. per keg dosage of fish oil?

Yes. It should be completely safe and both can alter blood clotting. But as long as your pup is not on a blood thinner, this should not create any issues. I hope this makes sense and is helpful in any way.
