season of allergies

Since I began practicing veterinary medicine over twenty years ago, I’ve had pet parents ask for my help on countless health issues for their pets. Kidney disease, arthritis, and weight issues are all common complaints for our pets, as they are for many people. But can you guess which issue plagues more of my patients than any other? If you guessed ALLERGIES, you hit the nail on the head.

Dog itching form allergy

Chronic itching and licking, ear infections, anal gland issues and GI disruption are all telltale signs of allergic response. Often, these symptoms tend to make both pets and pet owners alike pretty miserable. So, how do you put an end to your pet’s itchy misery?

The first step in controlling allergies is understanding what causes an allergic response. All allergic symptoms are controlled directly by the immune system. So, when Fluffy starts to scratch, it’s because her immune system has overreacted to the presence of a specific allergen. This is why my Holistic Allergy Support Protocol focuses on supporting a healthy, well-functioning immune system.

Obviously, the easiest way to combat an allergy is to figure out exactly what is causing the problem. When you can identify the source of an allergic response, you can better help your pet avoid the thing or things that they’re sensitive to. An allergy and sensitivity test is a great way to learn what foods and environmental factors might be triggering Fido’s discomfort.

Once you have an idea of what you’re up against, it’s time to arm your pet with the best possible tools to fight allergic response: a healthy gut and a strong immune system (one that doesn’t overreact or respond inappropriately to benign triggers).

I always start with healing the gut, because that’s where overall health, especially immune health, begins. A whole food diet, like The Original CrockPet Diet, paired with a powerful probiotic is going to get your furry friend started on the right track. Optimal gut health is going to help you support your pet’s immune system and its normal function, controlling overreaction to normal substances.

Quercetin & Nettles can help control symptoms like itchiness, and keep your furball more comfortable while you straighten out their immune system. Reducing inflammation as much as possible is a key factor as well. Using anti-inflammatory ingredients in Fido’s diet, and adding a high potency fish oil (specifically for Omega-3 fatty acids) will lend a powerful hand in reducing inflammation.
