Spring is a season of beauty. Trees are in bloom, lawns turn green again, and flowers begin to sprout.

Unfortunately, spring brings with it allergies.  Since it’s unlikely that you’ll see your cat or dog walking around the house with a box of tissues, how can you tell when your furry friends are suffering from allergies?

The key is to pay attention to the signs and symptoms of pet allergies. The faster you can identify the problem, the sooner you can get your pet relief. Keep reading below for my tips to easily spot allergy symptoms in your cat or dog.

Common Pet Allergy Symptoms

Believe it or not, pets experience most of the same allergy symptoms we do as humans.

So how do you determine if the symptom is allergy related or just a fluke?

The first step is to monitor your pet’s condition.

The following symptoms may be signs of allergies:

Itchy/Watery Eyes

Occasionally your pets will shed a tear. If watery eyes are rare for your pet, the culprit is likely a piece of dirt or dust.

Just like humans, cats and dogs occasionally end up with grime in their eyes that can cause irritation.

If the irritation doesn’t go away in a day or so, the culprit might be allergies.

Irritated, itchy, and watery eyes can cause extreme amounts of discomfort, cause blurred vision, and can even become infected.

These are definite signs that your pet is dealing with more than just a piece of dust in the eyes.

Itchy Skin

Everyone gets an itch from time to time.

It’s actually quite common to watch your pets scratch themselves to relieve an itchy back or head.

Itching, however, becomes worrisome when a pet can’t stop scratching.

If you notice your pet is excessively scratching itself, skin allergies might be the problem.

Hot Spots

A hot spot is an area of skin on your pet that becomes inflamed and infected.

They are easily identifiable as red, oozy, painful, and itchy spots on the skin.

There is nothing normal about hot spots; however, they are relatively common.

Hot spots can be caused by many things including food allergies, insect bites, and bacterial infections.

If you see a hot spot on your pet, it could be allergy related.

Infected Ears

Pets that suffer from allergies are predisposed to ear infections.

Why? Because allergens inflame the skin.

The inflammation then allows bacteria and yeast to grow inside the ear canal.
How can you tell if your pet’s ears are infected?

Ear scratching, head shaking, and stinky ears are common symptoms of ear infections. If you notice your pet getting regular ear infections, it’s very possible that allergens are the cause.

Talk to Your Vet

After recording your pet’s symptoms, the next step is to talk to your vet.

It’s important to always be honest with your vet.

Don’t leave out information. The more your vet knows, the easier it will be to diagnose your pet.

If your pet’s allergies are mild, you might be able to get rid of them by making a few changes around the house.

Help Relieve Your Pet’s Allergy Symptoms from Home

If you could make simple changes in the life of your pet that would help eliminate allergies, would you do it?

Of course you would!

Don’t wait any longer. Try the following things to get rid of your pet’s sniffles and sneezes.

Home Hygiene

The first thing you need to think about is your home environment.

Pets spend a majority of their lives close to the ground, which is a prime place for dirt and dust to collect.

If you don’t keep your carpets vacuumed and your floors mopped, you may be worsening your pet’s allergies.

Pet Hygiene

It’s common for people to avoid bathing their pets. Especially when they don’t enjoy water.

Regardless of what your pets’ feelings about water are, you need to make sure they are kept clean.

Why?

Pet hygiene is important.

Bathing your pet helps wash away allergens that get caught in the fur. This is very important for animals with undercoats and long fur.

Don’t allow your pets’ hygiene to affect their health.

Make sure to wash your best friend with a safe, natural pet shampoo from time to time to get rid of irritating allergens.

Pet Diet

Did you know animals have food allergies just like humans do? Pay attention to what you feed your pet. It may be the cause of the discomfort.

Pet food allergies are incredibly common. Corn, wheat, soy, and yeast are just a few things that can cause an allergic reaction in pets.

These ingredients are cheap to produce, so to lower overhead costs, corn and wheat have become the dominant ingredients found in commercial dog and cat food.

If your pet is suffering from allergies, you might need to change up his or her diet and steer clear of the food your find on the shelf.

You might think the only alternative is to feed your dog or cat “people food.” That’s actually the correct answer. The caveat is, certain foods will help your pet bypass allergies.

When I developed The Original CrockPET Diet®, my dream was to help pet owners provide care for their pets without worry that store-bought products would cause illness, obesity, or allergic reactions.

Getting rid of processed foods and introducing more natural options help ease pet food allergies.

Made from simple and nutrient-rich foods, this diet will help you bypass skin abrasions, itchiness, and other associated allergy symptoms.

The key is to find foods that build up your pet’s immune system instead of fighting against it. Unprocessed meats, vegetables, and even some fruits are ideal for immune system health—all of which you’ll find in The Original CrockPET Diet®.

Take Action

There are so many things we can do for our pets to ensure they live the healthiest and happiest life possible.

If the in-home pet allergy remedies aren’t working, talk with a vet. There are powerful allergy supplements, such as Quercetin & Nettles, that help your pet overcome allergies.

I recommend consulting with a veterinarian to see which supplements are right for your pet. Quality allergy treatments are available in our shop—all of which you can access with a no-cost Nutrition Consultation.

It may take some trial and error, but a solution to your pet’s itchy skin and watery eyes is just around the corner with the help of your trusted vet.

Give your pet the best possible immune system and join The Original CrockPET Diet® community.
